EU Urges Israel to Halt Hostilities in Lebanon

(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa issued an urgent call Wednesday for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and the safeguarding of civilian lives, characterizing conditions on the ground as "appalling" amid a surging displacement crisis affecting more than 1.3 million people.

Costa disclosed via X, the US-owned social media platform, that he had spoken directly with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to relay the European Union's condolences and commitment to the country.

"I spoke with President Aoun to express the EU's condolences for the loss of civilian lives and our solidarity and support for Lebanon and its people," he said.

Costa also signaled Brussels' approval of Beirut's recent move against Hezbollah, stating: "Lebanon made the right decision to ban Hezbollah's military activities," and warning that the group "must cease its attacks immediately."

Turning to Israel, Costa issued a pointed demand: "Israel should stop its military operations and engage in direct talks with the Lebanese authorities."

He reinforced the call with a firm reminder of legal obligations: "All parties must respect international law and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure."

The statements come as Israeli airstrikes and a ground incursion in southern Lebanon — launched in response to a cross-border Hezbollah assault on March 2 — have left at least 1,072 people dead and 2,966 wounded, according to Lebanese officials.

The Lebanon offensive is unfolding in parallel with a broader regional conflagration ignited by a joint US-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which began on Feb. 28 and has since killed more than 1,340 people. Tehran has answered with drone and missile barrages directed at Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states, targeting what Iranian officials describe as US military infrastructure across the region.
