EU Criticizes US Over Iran Strike Without Coordination with European Partners

(MENAFN) A senior European Union official on Tuesday issued a strong public criticism of the United States for carrying out military operations against Iran without prior coordination with European partners, describing Washington as an “unpredictable ally” and voicing concern about the repercussions for Europe’s economy, security, and migration outlook.

During remarks delivered in Paris, European Council President Antonio Costa made what observers consider one of the most direct criticisms yet from EU leadership. He highlighted rising tensions across the Atlantic linked to the Iran conflict.

“For the very first time, the United States launched a war in the Middle East, in our neighborhood, without any prior information to European allies or NATO,” he said, openly airing mounting transatlantic tensions over the Iran conflict.

He emphasized that the economic fallout is already being felt across Europe. “We are paying, we are suffering,” he said, pointing to surging energy costs, disrupted trade flows, and wider financial strain on households and governments throughout the region.

The EU leader also warned that the longer the conflict continues, the more severe its broader consequences could become, particularly in terms of humanitarian impact and population displacement. “If this war continues,” he warned, it threatens “a new migration crisis.”

He underlined the importance of Europe preparing for scenarios where coordination with Washington may not be guaranteed. “We must be prepared to act alone … because perhaps to act alone means to act without our unpredictable ally.”
